Calls for Submission

Current calls for submission for public art projects in Downtown Iowa City are posted below.

We have included information about each location, but we highly encourage you to take a walk past these sites to familiarize yourself with the wall, its surroundings, the texture of its surface, and how big or small the wall feels to tackle. Each call has links to higher resolution images to use for mockups. You can apply to each spot with as many different designs as you wish, and you can apply to as many spots as you want. Each design must have its own separate application. More information can be found in each application.

Artists or teams of artists will be insured by the Iowa City Downtown District. Some aspects of the prep work for projects may be approached collaboratively if opportunity arises. Proposals should take into account overhead costs related to the completion of the mural (materials, scaffolding, rentals, etc) and then calibrate the design around the remaining budget.

Questions? Please contact us here, or we can set up a meeting to talk through any aspect of your application. We are here as a resource to make every application strong and each project a success! This link and this link are some good resources if large scale outdoor work is new territory for you.

229 East washington street, Alley

This is the rear wall to Meacham Travel Agency. The wall is in good condition. The surface is a smooth, painted parge coat. Designs should activate the entire wall, and incorporate service lines. The wall is on the end of the alley with good exposure in a high traffic area. This wall faces South, receiving direct sunlight. This is at the entrance to an alley, and has good visibility. The property owner is open to designs that are inviting, positive, and engaging, and looking to avoid something controversial.

Approximate size: H 20'x L 35'

Budget: $4,000

Sponsors: UICCU, ICDD, and private donations.

118 East College street, alley

This is the rear wall to FilmScene and Velvet Coat. The wall is in mixed condition, and comprised of varying materials. Mural proposals for this space should activate the entire wall, and tie together the disparate materials. Proposals encouraged to include cinder block vestibule seen in second image. This wall faces north, and receives no direct sunlight.

Design brief: "More abstract than literal. The Neal Armstrong mural in Cincinnati keeps coming to mind. What we really don't want to see is classic movie stars, filmstrips, audiences in a theater, etc—those overused cliches."

Approximate size: H 20'x L 30'

Budget: $6,000

Sponsors: UICCU, ICDD, and private donations.

204 East washington street, alley

This is the north wall of US Bank. The wall is painted masonry. The brick is in good condition and the paint surface is in mixed condition. Mural proposals for this wall can be of variable size in terms of height/width/density, but should be visible from the street as you approach the alley. Property owner is looking for a bold colorful design that may or may not include figurative imagery. Not a requirement, but celebrating someone from Iowa City history could be a direction the property owner's interest is piqued by. This wall faces north and receives no direct sunlight.

Approximate size: Entire wall is H 32'x L 80', mural size can be variable in proportion to budget

Budget: $5,000

Sponsors: US Bank, ICDD, and private donations.

220 East washington street, alley

This is the north wall of Beadology, as well as an entrance to Over the Moon. Designs should have full coverage, helping tie together the variable surface materials. This wall faces north and receives no direct sunlight.

Design brief: "We would like a colorful, positive political message (peace, love, unity, etc), as the subject of the mural.  Would love it if the large utility pipes were incorporated into the visual. The whole side of the building is fair game.  [Over the Moon] may want some perimeter around the door way saved for her purpose or to just be a painted frame."

Approximate size: H 24'x L 25'

Budget: $6,000

Sponsors: UICCU, ICDD, and private donations.

118 south dubuque street, alley

This is the Fieldhouse building. The building is soft brick and should remain untouched. This is the north side of the building and receives no natural light. There are a mix of smaller opportunities on this property, including these two access points and the utility service boxes. Proposals should activate in some manner all of these surfaces. Surfaces are in mixed condition, and given the circumstances, the boarded up areas could have a new substrate attached over them, rather than painting directly on the surface. This would allow a project to be worked off-site to some degree, and then installed. There are also two boarded up windows on the rear of the building that could be activated as well as part of the project.

Size: Variable

Budget: $1500

Sponsors: UICCU, ICDD, and private donations.
